Prime time
Mode
Aperture Priority
Aperture
f/5.6 - f/7.1 for big cats. f/8 for landscape.
ISO
400-1600 dawn. 200-400 late morning.
Shutter
1/800s minimum for moving subjects. 1/1600s for action.
White balance
Shade (7500K) or Auto. Shade warms the amber light correctly.
Pro tip
Expose for the highlight on the animal's face. Recover shadows in post. Never blow the catchlight in the eye.
Heat Shimmer Management
Important
Problem
Heat shimmer distorts telephoto images above 400mm after 09:30 on open plains
Window
05:30-09:30 for clean telephoto. After 09:30 move to woodland and shade.
Workaround
Shoot from vehicle windows, not roof. Lower angle = less heat shimmer path.
Focal test
200mm clean until 10:30. 400mm until 09:30. 500mm+ until 09:00 on hot days. Plan drives accordingly.
Vehicle as Hide - Technique
Essential
Engine off
Switch off 30m before composing. Vibration destroys sharpness at 400mm+.
Beanbag
Window beanbag outperforms any tripod in a vehicle. Non-negotiable for 500mm.
Position
Sun behind you or 45-degrees to side. Never shoot into direct sun unless silhouette is the goal.
Patience
A stationary vehicle with engine off is invisible to wildlife. Stay for 20 minutes minimum at any quality sighting - the behaviour develops.
